We stayed in Kirtland for Day 6 at a AMAZING Residence Inn...it was an apartment complete with full kitchen. Super fun!! We went and did the tour at the Kirtland Temple which is now owned by the FLDS church, otherwise known as the Community of Christ church. It was a different experience having another faith give history of and tour the temple...you had to read between the lines a little. We then went to the church visitors center and did some church history sites that the church does own. It was fun to see the Eli Whitney store/Joseph Smith house/school of the prophets/saw mill/school house etc. The LDS and FLDS church as completely civil about things in Kirtland and it works out really nice to have them own the temple. When it comes down to it- if the church owned it, they would have to require a recommend to tour it b/c it is a dedicated temple and you cannot undedicate it. So it being a historic tourist site- things work out nice.
